KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: Vet doctors who belong to Four Paws, an international organisation, have reached Karachi to conduct a series of surgeries of two elephants in Karachi Zoo.
Earlier vets from Four Paws examined of four elephants in Karachi in 2021 and noted that one of the elephants needs a “complicated” surgery to remove a damaged and infected tusk while the second elephant has dental problems and a medical issue with a foot.

Therefore, an eight-member team from Four Paws arrived in Pakistan on Aug 16 to provide treatment to elephants. The process of surgeries and medical treatment will complete on Friday (Aug 19).
Amir Khalil, who heads the team of vets, veterinary surgeons and wildlife experts, said the other two elephants in Karachi will also get medical treatment.
Four Paws also plans to offer instructions to Karachi zoo caretakers on ensuring better care of the elephants. In 2020, an elephant named Kaavan was transferred from Islamabad to Cambodia because of improper care in Islamabad and now the animal lives in an elephant sanctuary. Kaavan had languished in the Islamabad zoo for 35 years, most of that time in chains, and he lost his partner in 2012.
