ISLAMABAD: At least four Pakistani nationals have been rescued from human traffickers in a joint operation between Pakistan and Iran, the Pakistani embassy in Tehran announced in a statement. The rescue comes amidst a rise in migrant boat tragedies, often linked to organized criminal networks exploiting vulnerable individuals.
“The Embassy of Pakistan, with the cooperation of the Government of Iran, successfully rescued four Pakistani citizens today,” the embassy’s statement read. It added, “The human smugglers involved were also arrested during the rescue operation.”
Human trafficking remains a significant challenge in Pakistan, with smugglers using land, sea, and air routes to transport people illegally, primarily to European destinations. Despite continued efforts to combat this illicit trade, traffickers consistently adapt their methods, keeping authorities in a constant battle against the evolving threat.
These traffickers typically charge exorbitant sums to smuggle migrants through dangerous land routes from Pakistan into Iran. From there, migrants are abandoned on overcrowded, unseaworthy boats destined for Europe. Many of these boats sink, resulting in tragic loss of life. In some cases, traffickers murder the migrants or hold them hostage to extort additional money from their families.
According to the embassy, the rescued individuals had initially entered Iran legally but were kidnapped by a human trafficking ring. The traffickers tortured the victims and demanded large ransoms from their families.
“The timely intervention of the Embassy of Pakistan and the Iranian authorities saved their lives,” the statement said.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran, Muhammad Mudassir Tipu, urged Pakistanis intending to travel to Iran to use legal channels and to remain in contact with the embassy in case of emergencies. He also emphasized the importance of vigilance to avoid falling victim to human smugglers.
