Israeli Strike
An Israeli airstrike on Sunday decimated significant sections of the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City, marking a devastating blow to the already fragile healthcare system in the besieged enclave.
This facility had been the last functioning medical center in the city, and its destruction has sparked widespread international condemnation and raised urgent concerns about the safety of civilians and medical staff in Gaza.
Eyewitnesses reported that the strike targeted and obliterated the hospital’s intensive care and surgery departments, forcing the immediate evacuation of patients, many of whom were still in their beds.
Video footage captured the harrowing scene: large plumes of smoke and flames rising from the two-story building, as both hospital staff and patients rushed to flee in the darkness of night. The airstrike has left the hospital in ruins, complicating an already dire humanitarian crisis in the region.
In a statement issued by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the attack was justified as targeting a Hamas “command and control center” allegedly located within the hospital compound.
The IDF claimed that precautionary measures were taken to minimize civilian casualties, including precise munitions, aerial surveillance, and prior warnings.
According to reports from a local journalist at the scene, Israeli forces had contacted a doctor in the emergency department prior to the strike, ordering the immediate evacuation of the hospital with just 20 minutes to clear the building.
Despite the evacuation efforts, Gaza’s civil emergency services reported no immediate casualties, though dozens of people, including vulnerable women and children who had sought shelter in the hospital courtyard, were seen fleeing in the chaos. The hospital’s destruction has forced both patients and healthcare workers to relocate, with many now without proper medical care.
The Hamas-run media office condemned the attack, calling it “a horrific crime” against innocent civilians who had sought refuge in the facility. Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital had become a critical lifeline for Gaza City residents after other major medical centers, such as the Al-Shifa complex, were also destroyed in the ongoing conflict. Tragically, this is not the first time Al-Ahli has been targeted.
Earlier in October 2023, an explosion at the hospital killed hundreds, though the causes of the blast were contested—Palestinian officials blamed Israeli airstrikes, while Israel pointed to a misfired rocket by Palestinian militants.
The attack on the hospital underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with Israel’s military offensive—launched in response to the October 7, 2023, cross-border attack by Hamas—continuing to devastate the region.
Over 50,000 people in Gaza have died since the beginning of the conflict, and with the latest airstrikes, the healthcare infrastructure of Gaza continues to crumble, leaving countless civilians without necessary medical care.
The destruction of Al-Ahli is likely to intensify calls for greater protection of medical facilities and infrastructure, especially as the death toll rises.
International humanitarian agencies have yet to issue an immediate response, but the global community is bracing for a surge in calls for urgent aid and action to prevent further suffering in Gaza. The situation remains dire, with growing concerns over the safety of civilians and the desperate need for humanitarian assistance.
