Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s reaction to President Donald Trump’s proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” during his inauguration speech has gone viral.
During his address on January 20, Trump declared:
“America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on earth, inspiring awe and admiration around the world. A short time from now, we will be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. We will also restore the name of a great president, William McKinley, to Mount McKinley, where it belongs.”
A clip circulating on X (formerly Twitter) shows Clinton laughing heartily at Trump’s remarks, with others in the audience visibly chuckling behind her. Social media users were quick to praise her reaction.
One user commented, “Fair enough,” while another wrote, “I could watch this all day.” Another admirer stated, “She gets it.”
This isn’t the first time Trump has suggested the name change. Earlier this month, during a January 7 press conference, he reiterated the idea:
“We’re going to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. It has a beautiful ring to it—covers a lot of territory. And it’s appropriate. Mexico must stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”
The Gulf of Mexico is one of North America’s most significant bodies of water, covering approximately 600,000 square miles, making it the ninth-largest globally. Trump’s comments have sparked widespread discussion, with opinions ranging from amusement to criticism.
