The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday condemned US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose sanctions on the institution, asserting its commitment to delivering “justice and hope” worldwide.
In a statement, the ICC denounced the US executive order, calling it an attempt to undermine its independent and impartial judicial work.
“The ICC condemns the issuance by the US of an Executive Order seeking to impose sanctions on its officials and harm its independent and impartial judicial work,” the court said.
Based in The Hague, the ICC reaffirmed its support for its personnel and pledged to continue seeking justice for victims of atrocities across the world.
Trump imposed sanctions on the court on Thursday, denouncing its investigations into the US and its ally Israel as “illegitimate and baseless.” The measures included asset freezes and travel bans on ICC officials, employees, their families, and anyone assisting the court’s investigations.
While the names of the targeted individuals were not immediately disclosed, Trump’s previous sanctions had focused on the ICC’s chief prosecutor.
The court urged its 125 member states, civil society groups, and nations worldwide to stand in solidarity for justice and fundamental human rights.
