ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) today ordered the federal government to set up within this week Human Rights Courts.
Chief Justice of IHC Athar Minallah gave this order On Monday while hearing a case pertaining to the physical torture on prisoners of Adiala Jail.
Athar Minallah said that the cases of human rights violations must be heard in a special court.
The IHC chief justice further said that the court will not tolerate torture on the prisoners. He said that inhuman and brutal practice of custodial torture must end now.
Athar Minallah ordered action against the IG of Punjab Prisons Superintendent of Adiala Jail.
Earlier, an official of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan told the court that 11 children have been granted bail but they don’t have any place to go.
After hearing this, the IHC chief judge said, “Why shouldn’t we keep them in Prime Minister or Chief Minister’s House?”
The HRCP secretary further informed the court that 1,400 prisoners are drug addicts and only one male doctor is available for 4,000 prisoners in Adiala Jail.
To this, Justice Minallah said that HRCP has wide-ranging powers and can even hire consultants. He said that the HRCP can access any prisoner and even the superintendent of the jail cannot stop it.
