Visa-Free Entry
In the aftermath of the deadly Pahalgam attack in Indian occupied Kashmir, India’s Foreign Ministry has announced significant measures against Pakistan nationals. As part of its response, India has decided to bar Pakistani nationals from traveling to India under the SAARC visa exemption programme.
Any visas previously issued under this scheme are deemed cancelled, and Pakistani nationals holding such visas have been given 48 hours to leave India. This move is seen as a direct response to the attack, which was claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Furthermore, the integrated Attari checkpost between India and Pakistan will be closed with immediate effect. This decision underscores the heightened tensions between the two nations following the attack. The closure of the checkpost is expected to disrupt trade and travel between the two countries, further straining their already complex relationship.
The Pahalgam Attack
The Pahalgam attack occurred on Tuesday in the popular tourist area of Pahalgam in Indian occupied Kashmir. Heavily armed men launched a surprise attack, opening indiscriminate fire at Baisaran meadow, a scenic uphill area accessible only by foot or pony rides.
The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 26 people, with 25 of the victims being Indian nationals and one Nepalese. Many tourists were caught off guard as the sudden volley of bullets rang out, leaving little time for anyone to react or seek shelter.
The Resistance Front (TRF) claimed responsibility for the attack, stating on social media that it condemned the more than 85,000 “outsiders” who had settled in Kashmir, leading to a “demographic change”. This claim has further exacerbated tensions in the region, with India vowing a swift and strong response to those who carried out and planned the attack.
In response to the attack, Indian police have detained at least 1,500 people across Jammu and Kashmir as part of an ongoing investigation. India’s Defence Minister has pledged to take decisive action against those responsible for the attack, ensuring that such incidents do not recur in the future. The investigation is ongoing, with security forces working to identify and apprehend any additional suspects.
