Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian is set to arrive in Pakistan on Saturday, August 2, for a two-day official visit, marking a significant development in the deepening of bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries. The visit comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and is aimed at reinforcing cooperation in multiple sectors, particularly border security and economic collaboration.
According to his political adviser Mehdi Sanai, President Pezeshkian’s itinerary includes meetings with Pakistan’s top leadership, as well as engagements with influential figures from the cultural and business sectors. These meetings are expected to further solidify the longstanding ties that span political, economic, religious, and cultural dimensions.
A key objective of the upcoming visit is to enhance provincial and cross-border cooperation, especially in the context of trade. Currently, the volume of trade between Iran and Pakistan stands at approximately $3 billion. Both nations are expected to explore avenues to significantly increase this figure, with discussions likely to focus on removing trade barriers, improving customs procedures, and facilitating cross-border movement of goods.
This will be President Pezeshkian’s first visit to Pakistan since assuming office and marks the second such high-level Iranian visit in the span of two years. In April 2024, former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi visited Pakistan for a three-day official tour, his final international visit before his tragic death in a helicopter crash the following month.
Earlier this year, in May 2025, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Iran as part of a regional outreach initiative aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s ties with neighbouring and friendly countries. During his visit, the Pakistani premier met with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Pezeshkian. The discussions focused heavily on economic collaboration, regional connectivity, and pressing regional issues.
One of the prominent themes during these discussions was the emphasis on peace and security in the region. Both sides acknowledged the importance of stabilising regional dynamics and expressed mutual appreciation for efforts made to de-escalate tensions during the conflict with India. Additionally, the two leaders discussed the urgent need to halt the ongoing violence in Gaza and push for a sustainable ceasefire.
Prime Minister Sharif had also previously traveled to Iran in May 2024 to attend the memorial service of the late President Raisi, further underscoring the depth and continuity of diplomatic engagements between the two countries.
President Pezeshkian’s upcoming visit is poised to pave the way for enhanced strategic partnerships and collaborative initiatives, especially in trade, energy, border security, and regional diplomacy.
