Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to travel to Moscow later this week to brief Russian officials on the latest round of nuclear negotiations with the United States, a spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced on Monday.
Araghchi’s upcoming visit follows a significant meeting on Saturday in Muscat, Oman, where he held talks with U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. The meeting marked the highest-level direct engagement between Tehran and Washington on nuclear issues since the 2015 nuclear deal collapsed.
“Dr. Araghchi will travel to Moscow at the end of the week,” said ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, noting that the visit was “pre-planned” and would serve as “an opportunity to discuss the latest developments related to the Muscat talks.”
Both Iran and the U.S. described the weekend’s discussions as “constructive,” offering a rare glimmer of optimism amid ongoing tensions.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the visit and said Araghchi would hold meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and other senior officials.
The renewed diplomatic momentum comes just weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, urging a return to nuclear talks while warning that refusal could lead to military consequences.
Russia, a close ally of Iran, along with China, has been involved in parallel discussions with Tehran over its nuclear program. Moscow welcomed the recent Iran-U.S. dialogue, reiterating its call for a peaceful resolution and cautioning that military conflict would spell a “global catastrophe.”
Another round of negotiations between Iran and the United States is scheduled for April 19.
