The Islamabad Capital Administration imposed Section 144 on Saturday to address the escalating smog issue. As part of this directive, smoke-emitting vehicles, factories, and brick kilns have been banned, along with restrictions on burning waste and crops to mitigate air pollution. These orders, issued by the Islamabad additional district magistrate, are effective immediately and will remain in place for the next two months. Strict action will be taken against any violations of these directives.
EPA Appeals to Islamabad DC for Smog Control
Previously, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warned that smog would persist in Islamabad and Rawalpindi from November through February. In a letter to the Islamabad deputy commissioner, the EPA urged the enforcement of preventive measures, including a ban on smoke-producing brick kilns, industrial sites, and vehicles. The EPA highlighted that Islamabad and Rawalpindi face risks similar to those of heavily affected cities like Lahore, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Multan, and Faisalabad.
The EPA has predicted further deterioration in air quality in the Potohar region in the coming days. Emphasizing the health and economic hazards posed by smog, the EPA warned of associated risks, including respiratory, cardiac, eye, and skin issues. The EPA stressed the need for district administration cooperation to effectively combat the air pollution crisis.
