Karachi’s Police Chief, Javed Alam Odho, has expressed grave concerns over the growing infiltration of criminals into the private security sector, calling it a national “cancer.” Speaking at the launch of an advanced monitoring system, which includes eight new security cameras around the Chinese Consulate, Odho emphasized the urgent need for stricter regulations to combat this alarming trend.
Odho revealed that the Home Department is considering new legislation aimed at tightening oversight of private security companies. The proposed laws would hold security company owners accountable for thoroughly vetting their guards. If these owners fail to perform adequate background checks, they could face criminal prosecution.
In addition, Odho highlighted that intelligence agencies such as the Special Branch and the Intelligence Bureau are actively investigating instances where criminals have infiltrated the private security industry. This underscores the growing severity of the situation.
The Police Chief also noted that efforts to enforce law and order are extending beyond the security sector. A particular focus has been placed on cracking down on illegal vehicle modifications, including tinted windows, altered license plates, and the display of firearms in public.
In just one week, authorities have issued almost 6,000 traffic fines, registered 940 cases, and seized several vehicles as part of the effort to ensure public safety and compliance with the law.
