North Korea has arrested several senior engineers following the failed launch of a newly constructed 5,000-tonne warship, an incident that reportedly unfolded in the presence of leader Kim Jong Un and dealt a blow to the regime’s image.
According to official reports, the mishap occurred at the northeastern port of Chongjin, where the warship tipped onto its side during launch. The stern swung into the harbour while the bow remained on the slipway, according to satellite imagery analyzed by the U.S.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). The vessel was seen covered in blue tarps.
The public nature of the failure—likely witnessed by a large audience—added to the embarrassment for Kim Jong Un, who has been eager to project North Korea’s military strength. In response, he pledged harsh punishment for those deemed responsible.
As the investigation progressed, law enforcement detained several individuals, including the chief engineer of the Chongjin Shipyard.
Kim has ordered the warship to be fully restored ahead of a key ruling party meeting scheduled for June. Efforts for the vessel’s rehabilitation are already underway.
In a separate statement, North Korea’s Ministry of Defence reaffirmed its intention to counter any military threat posed by rival nations, particularly in response to increased U.S. military activity in the region.
