US Weapons
ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expressing grave concern over the weapons left behind by the United States in Afghanistan after its troop withdrawal in August 2021.
The statement highlighted the significant security threat posed by these advanced US military weapons, which have reportedly been used by terrorist groups to carry out attacks on Pakistan’s soil.
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the presence of these weapons in Afghanistan had been a major issue for Pakistan’s national security.
Since the US withdrawal, Pakistan has raised its concerns about the potential misuse of these weapons by terrorist organizations.
Specifically, the spokesperson pointed to the involvement of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militant groups, which have been using the US-supplied arms in their attacks against Pakistan.
The statement underscored Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the situation and seek international support.
Pakistan has been consistently urging the authorities in Kabul to take effective action to ensure that these weapons do not fall into the hands of extremists or militant organizations.
The spokesperson stressed that the issue was not just a matter of regional security but also one that affects global peace, as the misuse of these weapons by terrorist groups could have broader implications.
Furthermore, the spokesperson expressed disappointment over the US decision to retrieve some of these advanced weapons from Afghanistan, without addressing the ongoing threat posed by those weapons that remain in the region.
The government of Pakistan has called for stronger measures to prevent further misuse and for the international community to hold Afghanistan’s authorities accountable for securing these arms.
The Pakistani government has reiterated its commitment to addressing the threat posed by these weapons, while continuing to call on the international community, including the United States, to assist in the efforts to prevent further escalation of violence in the region.
