Pakistan, China, and Russia jointly introduced a draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Sunday, calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Middle East. The resolution follows rising global alarm over US and Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
During an emergency UNSC session, the three countries issued sharp condemnations of the US-led military actions, warning of grave global repercussions if the conflict continues to escalate.
Russia’s UN envoy, Vasily Nebenzya, accused the United States of showing “utter disregard for the international community,” saying Washington had “opened a Pandora’s box.”
“No one can predict the scale of suffering or disaster these reckless actions may cause,” Nebenzya said. He criticized the U.S. for ignoring the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians and now jeopardizing global stability. He described the US-Israel strikes as a “humiliation of the international community,” and highlighted the “blatant double standards” in global nuclear governance—pointing out that Israel is not a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), unlike Iran, which remains under constant IAEA oversight.
China echoes alarm, calls for de-escalation
China’s Ambassador to the UN, Fu Cong, echoed Moscow’s criticism, stating that Beijing “strongly condemns the US attacks on Iran and its nuclear infrastructure.”
He warned that the situation risks spiraling out of control if not immediately addressed. “Israel must halt its aggression to avoid broader regional fallout,” Fu said.
Describing the strikes as a “serious breach” of international law and Iranian sovereignty, Fu asserted that the attacks had damaged the global nuclear non-proliferation framework and undermined efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.
Pakistan calls for diplomacy, reaffirms support for Iran
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, urged the Council to prevent further escalation by endorsing diplomacy over military action.
“We demand an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and call on all parties to return to diplomatic engagement,” he said. He denounced the attacks as violations of international law and voiced Pakistan’s “unwavering solidarity” with Iran.
Ambassador Iftikhar revealed that Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister is actively participating in diplomatic efforts to restore peace and urged global support for the trilateral resolution submitted by Pakistan, China, and Russia.
Iran reiterates right to retaliate
Iran’s UN envoy, Amir Saeid Iravani, renewed Tehran’s condemnation of the strikes, calling them “unprovoked and premeditated aggression” ordered directly by former US President Donald Trump.
He said the attacks on the Iranian nuclear sites in Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow represented another “shameful chapter” in US foreign policy, accusing Trump of exploiting the situation for political gain.
Iravani emphasized that Iran remains an “independent and peace-loving nation,” but reserves “the full right to respond” under Article 51 of the UN Charter. He linked the recent US strikes to prior Israeli attacks that Iran claims have killed over 400 people, describing them as part of a broader campaign of hostility.
