Pakistan has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take immediate action to implement an unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, aiming to halt the ongoing violence and destruction.
Addressing the UNSC session on the Middle East, particularly Palestine, Pakistan’s Alternate Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar, emphasized the need for the global community to unite in upholding the UN Charter and international law.
He called on the UNSC to establish safe humanitarian corridors to facilitate life-saving aid and prioritize rebuilding Gaza’s devastated healthcare infrastructure.
Ambassador Iftikhar reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding support for Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations, describing it as a moral obligation essential for the durability of the Two-State solution.
On Thursday, Pakistan marked the beginning of its eighth term (2025–26) as a non-permanent member of the 15-member UNSC. The Pakistani national flag was ceremonially installed outside the UNSC chamber alongside the flags of four other new non-permanent members: Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia.
During the flag installation ceremony, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the principles of the UN Charter. He stressed Pakistan’s dedication to maintaining international peace and security and fostering friendly relations among nations based on equal rights and self-determination.
“Pakistan will always serve as a strong advocate for peoples under foreign occupation and oppression, ensuring their right to self-determination,” he declared during his remarks.
