Pakistan has been elected to serve a four-year term on the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), from 2026 to 2029. The election took place during a voting session at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York.
In a statement issued by Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN, the country expressed its deep gratitude for the support extended by ECOSOC member states. The mission emphasized that this election is a strong reflection of the international community’s confidence in Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to global drug control efforts.
The statement further highlighted Pakistan’s readiness to take an active role in advancing the international agenda to combat drug-related challenges. It also underscored the country’s longstanding leadership in global initiatives aimed at curbing drug trafficking, production, and consumption. Pakistan has consistently contributed to UN policy discussions on narcotics control, maintaining a collaborative and proactive stance in the fight against drug-related issues.
“Pakistan looks forward to working closely with ECOSOC members and the broader UN membership to strengthen the CND’s role as the leading global body for drug policy-making,” the statement read.
“Our efforts will focus on ensuring that international drug control initiatives are comprehensive, effective, and align with the obligations outlined in the three UN drug control conventions,” it continued.
Pakistan’s election to the CND reaffirms its commitment to addressing the global drug menace and fostering international cooperation on narcotics-related challenges.
What is the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND)?
The UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), playing a central role in shaping international drug control policies. It oversees the implementation of the UN’s drug control treaties, promotes international cooperation, and provides a platform for governments to discuss and coordinate efforts in addressing the global drug problem.
The CND operates in alignment with the three primary UN drug control conventions: the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances, and the 1988 Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.
