Pakistan’s National Assembly (NA) expressed solidarity with the victims of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, which have claimed at least 24 lives. A resolution, moved by PPP lawmaker Naveed Aamir Jeeva, extended heartfelt condolences and urged the international community to join recovery efforts.
The resolution emphasized global unity, calling for collective action to assist those affected. Jeeva remarked, “We stand in solidarity with the people of Los Angeles. Tragedy unites us in our shared humanity.”
Los Angeles firefighters continue to battle the Palisades Fire, which has consumed 23,700 acres (9,500 hectares) and remains only 13% contained. Dangerous winds reaching up to 70 mph (110 kph) are expected to worsen the crisis, prompting a “particularly dangerous situation” warning. Entire neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble, leaving thousands displaced and under evacuation orders.
Efforts to curb the fire have been bolstered by additional resources, including water trucks and personnel from Mexico and across the western U.S. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also offered to send 150 personnel to assist.
The Eaton Fire in Altadena has destroyed 14,000 acres but has shown better containment at 27%. Combined, these fires have led to the evacuation of 100,000 residents.
As search teams with cadaver dogs scour the wreckage for victims, nighttime curfews have been extended. Several looters, including one posing as a firefighter, were arrested. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the blazes.
Climate change and urban sprawl have exacerbated wildfire risks, with President-elect Donald Trump blaming state officials for poor management despite the heroic efforts of firefighters operating around the clock.
The tragic events underscore the need for global collaboration in addressing climate-induced disasters.
