Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar, voiced serious concerns over India’s recent actions during a closed-door session of the UN Security Council, which was convened at Pakistan’s request.
Speaking before the 15-member body, including its five permanent members, Iftikhar drew attention to several critical matters—chief among them the worsening situation in Indian-administered Kashmir. He criticized what he described as unilateral steps by New Delhi that undermine regional peace.
Kashmir Identified as Core Conflict
Calling the Kashmir issue the central dispute between India and Pakistan, Iftikhar emphasized that the conflict has remained unresolved for over seven decades. He insisted that the people of Kashmir deserve justice and must be granted the right to determine their own future, in line with UN Security Council resolutions.
“The Kashmir conflict must be settled in accordance with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people,” he stated. He also denounced ongoing human rights abuses and military actions in the region, calling them violations of international law and a threat to broader regional stability.
Rejection of Involvement in Palgham Attack
Addressing accusations related to a recent attack in Palgham, Iftikhar unequivocally denied any Pakistani involvement, rejecting India’s claims. He condemned the incident and called for an impartial, international investigation to establish the facts. “Pakistan welcomes a transparent and independent inquiry,” he said, reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to justice.
Criticism Over Indus Waters Treaty Suspension
The Pakistani envoy also took issue with India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, labeling it a breach of international obligations. He described the treaty as a longstanding symbol of cooperation that must be upheld both in letter and spirit.
Pakistan’s Role in Counterterrorism and Call for Dialogue
Iftikhar highlighted Pakistan’s sacrifices in the global fight against terrorism, noting the loss of over 90,000 lives. He reiterated that Pakistan seeks regional peace through dialogue and negotiations, not confrontation. “We are ready to safeguard our sovereignty but believe diplomacy and mutual respect are the keys to lasting peace,” he said.
Appreciation for UNSC Engagement
In conclusion, Iftikhar thanked the Security Council for addressing these vital concerns and expressed hope for continued international involvement in seeking peaceful solutions to regional disputes.
