ISLAMABAD — Pakistan has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks on the Kashmir dispute, expressing appreciation for Washington’s constructive role in de-escalating tensions with India and calling for a resolution of the issue in line with United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.
In an official statement on Sunday, Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan lauded the efforts of the United States, along with other friendly countries, in helping broker a ceasefire between Pakistan and India following days of heightened hostilities that raised fears of a broader conflict in South Asia.
“Pakistan appreciates the constructive role of the United States, along with other friendly states, in facilitating the Pakistan-India ceasefire,” Khan said. “This is a vital step toward reducing tensions and preserving regional peace.”
The Foreign Office underscored that Kashmir remains a core issue between Pakistan and India with global implications. It reiterated Pakistan’s long-standing position that any lasting resolution must be grounded in the UNSC resolutions, which recognize the right of the Kashmiri people to self-determination through a plebiscite.
Kashmir at the Core of Regional Stability
“We believe that the resolution of the Kashmir issue is essential not only for long-term peace and stability in South Asia but also for international security,” the spokesperson stated. “This must be achieved in accordance with international law and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.”
The statement came after President Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform, announced the successful US-brokered ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed neighbors and offered to work toward resolving the Kashmir conflict. He also pledged to enhance trade ties with both India and Pakistan.
Trump Commits to Engagement on Kashmir, Trade
“While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade substantially with both of these great nations,” Trump wrote. “Additionally, I will work with you both to see if, after a thousand years, a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir.”
The Foreign Office welcomed Trump’s willingness to engage on Kashmir and voiced Pakistan’s readiness to work with Washington and other international partners to promote peace, security, and prosperity across the region.
Strengthening US-Pakistan Ties
The spokesperson also emphasized Islamabad’s commitment to deepening its partnership with the United States, particularly in the areas of economic cooperation, regional security, and counterterrorism.
“We are committed to advancing our bilateral relationship with the United States and look forward to exploring new avenues of cooperation across all sectors,” Khan said. “We also remain ready to support all credible efforts aimed at resolving regional disputes and promoting peace.”
The statement concludes amid cautious optimism over the fragile ceasefire and renewed international attention on one of the world’s most volatile flashpoints.
