Pakistani Woman
Asra Hussain Raza, a 26-year-old Pakistani woman, was among the victims of the tragic mid-air collision between a passenger plane and a military helicopter in Washington, DC, which claimed 67 lives.
Asra was on board American Airlines Flight 5342, a regional jet carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, when it collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter as it was preparing to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Before the collision, Asra had texted her husband, Hamaad Raza, who was waiting for her at the airport. She told him she would be landing in about 20 minutes. Unfortunately, that would be the last message he received from her.
The couple, who met while studying at Indiana University Bloomington, had been married for two years. Hamaad, now a 25-year-old accountant at Ernst & Young, had been eagerly awaiting her arrival when the disaster struck.
Asra, a graduate of Columbia University with a Master’s in Public Health, had recently traveled to Wichita, Kansas, for work-related purposes.
Asra’s father-in-law, Dr. Hashim Raza, a renowned doctor from Karachi, was devastated by the loss. Speaking to Reuters, he described Asra as a caring and ambitious individual who had a passion for improving public health.
He recalled that Asra was excited about working in Washington, DC, to further her goals of making a difference in public health. “All she wanted to do was help people,” Dr. Raza said, remembering her as an excellent cook who loved preparing a variety of cuisines.
The crash, which occurred on January 29, 2025, has been confirmed as the deadliest US air disaster in over 20 years. Authorities recovered the wreckage of the American Airlines flight in the Potomac River and are continuing efforts to retrieve all bodies.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has recovered the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder from the jet and is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the collision.
In the aftermath of the crash, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his deep sorrow for the loss of lives, offering his condolences to US President Donald Trump and the American people.
He also extended his sympathies to the families of the victims, including Asra’s grieving husband and her family in Pakistan.
The crash has sparked discussions about air traffic controller shortages and safety concerns, with the Federal Aviation Administration facing criticism for a lack of sufficient controllers.
Investigators are working to understand why the two aircraft, both reportedly following standard flight patterns, collided. Radio communications between air traffic controllers and the helicopter indicated that the helicopter was warned of the incoming jet and instructed to change course.
However, the exact cause of the incident remains unclear, and a preliminary report from the NTSB is expected within the next 30 days.
