ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today rejected the idea of wheat import through the private sector. PM remarked that the private importers can make ‘fat profits’ in the wake of devastating floods and low foreign exchange reserves.
PM Shehbaz said, “It is being propagated that the government is not giving permission to the private sector to import wheat. I will not allow the private sector to buy wheat at a price of their choice and make huge profits.”

Premier stated this while chairing a National Flood Response and Coordination Centre (NFRCC) meeting in Islamabad on Thursday morning.
Shehbaz Sharif said the provincial governments are respectable and doing good work, but a system is in place.
He said his team in the federal cabinet was importing the commodity and saving billions of rupees.
PM Shehbaz said that the government could allow the private sector to import wheat but only in normal circumstances and not in the prevailing critical situation.
The PM also informed the participants of the meeting that the cabinet had also debated wheat shortage issue and ways to overcome it.
“This will not happen, and this shall not happen,” he asserted.
The premier also told the meeting that his cabinet had held a debate and discussion session to address wheat shortage.
