ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, speaking at the Overseas Pakistanis Global Foundation ceremony in Islamabad on Tuesday, expressed heartfelt gratitude to overseas Pakistanis for their immense contributions to the nation’s growth and global standing.
“I am deeply grateful to the overseas Pakistanis here today,” the Prime Minister said, acknowledging their efforts in bringing pride to Pakistan internationally. He highlighted the 30% increase in remittances from overseas Pakistanis, which has significantly boosted the national treasury and helped stabilize the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
Emphasizing the government’s dedication, Shehbaz Sharif stated, “The government and the nation salute the overseas Pakistanis,” stressing that their investments have a major positive impact on the national economy. “When overseas Pakistanis buy properties, the prices soar,” he noted.
The Prime Minister assured the audience that the government is addressing long-standing issues faced by the overseas community, particularly in property disputes. “The overseas department in Punjab, under the leadership of the Chief Minister, is actively working on resolving these issues,” he said. Shehbaz Sharif also pledged his full commitment to ensuring the rights of overseas Pakistanis, saying, “I will not rest until their concerns are addressed.”
In a significant announcement, the Prime Minister revealed plans to issue blue passports to overseas Pakistanis, granting them enhanced recognition and privileges.
Shehbaz Sharif also promised the immediate restoration of the Green Channel initiative, originally introduced by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to simplify processing for overseas Pakistanis. “We will not let the Green Channel turn into yellow or red,” he assured.
Turning to national security, the Prime Minister addressed the resurgence of terrorism, criticizing previous governments for their leniency. “By 2018, terrorism had been largely eradicated from Pakistan, thanks to the sacrifices of 80,000 Pakistanis, including civilians, officers, and soldiers,” he said. He condemned the decision of a prior government to allow terrorists back into the country, calling it an act of hostility toward the nation.
However, Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed his government’s determination to fight terrorism. “Terrorism will be eradicated once again, and this land will be made safe. These sacrifices will not go in vain,” he vowed.
In his speech, the Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of engaging the youth. He expressed support for the proposal to hold a Youth Festival and announced plans to collaborate with the information minister to organize the event.
With over 10 million Pakistanis living abroad, the Prime Minister’s remarks highlighted the essential role of the diaspora in shaping the future of the country.
