Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will travel to Baku, Azerbaijan, on Tuesday to join the World Leaders Climate Action Summit, a two-day event held within the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), as reported by Radio Pakistan.
The summit, hosted by Azerbaijan’s Presidency, will gather global leaders to outline national strategies for advancing the Paris Agreement on climate change. The Azerbaijani Presidency, alongside the US and China, will also co-host a session on addressing methane and other non-CO2 greenhouse gases.
During the event, PM Shehbaz is expected to advocate for climate solidarity and justice, anchored in principles of equity.
Previously, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, and the climate ministry secretary met with former Maldives President Muhammad Nasheed at the Pakistan pavilion in COP29, as shared by the Ministry of Climate Change on X.
Another post on X emphasized Pakistan’s focus at COP29 on climate finance and adaptation, urging swift action to counter the increasing climate challenges.
Ranked among the world’s top 10 most climate-vulnerable nations, Pakistan faces escalating extreme weather, including intense monsoons, floods, heatwaves, glacial melt, and lake outburst floods.
In June 2024, record-high temperatures from a heatwave severely impacted health and agriculture. In 2022, catastrophic floods triggered by climate change caused the loss of 1,700 lives, affected 33 million people, devastated vast areas of farmland, and inflicted $30 billion in damages, according to government estimates.
