His funeral prayers will be held on Wednesday, April 9, after Zuhrain prayers at Masjid-o-Imambargah Yasrab, located in Phase 4 of Defence Society, Karachi.
Haider’s wife confirmed the news of his passing, stating, “My husband, PPP Central General Secretary Senator Taj Haider, has passed away.”
Expressing profound grief over the loss, PPP Sindh General Secretary Waqar Mehdi remembered Haider as a lifelong political companion and a devoted party worker. He described Haider as one of the founding and ideological members of the PPP, emphasizing that his political contributions would never be forgotten.
Born on March 8, 1942, in Kota, Rajasthan, Haider’s family was known for its intellectual and academic background. Following the Partition of India, Haider migrated to Pakistan and pursued his early education at Government Boys High School in Karachi’s Ranchor Lines.
Although Haider started his career in the fine arts, contributing significantly as a television writer, he also acted in his own drama serial, Aabla Pa, portraying the role of Professor Adi Wala. Additionally, he wrote thought-provoking columns for various newspapers.
Haider’s political journey began in 1967 when he attended the Socialist Convention and later joined PPP, becoming one of its foundational members.
His commitment to the party and the cause of democracy was unwavering, leading to his recognition with the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 2012 for his contributions to literature and science. Furthermore, he received the 13th PTV Award for Best Drama Serial Writer in 2006.
The news of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes from political leaders and colleagues. Former President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over Haider’s passing, calling him a key asset to the PPP and a committed member who had rendered invaluable services to the party and Pakistan’s democratic struggle.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also expressed his sadness, praising Haider’s political, social, and literary contributions, which he said would never be forgotten. Bilawal described Haider as a dignified and intellectual leader who represented wisdom and awareness in Pakistani politics.

Karachi Press Club President Fazil Jamili, in a heartfelt message, said that Senator Haider was a “rare breed” in today’s politically divided landscape, acknowledging him as a man of integrity, democracy, and commitment to the people of Pakistan.
His death leaves a significant void in Pakistan’s political and intellectual circles, and his legacy is expected to inspire future generations of leaders.
