Smartphone Purchases
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a crucial advisory urging consumers to exercise caution when purchasing mobile phones.
The warning, disseminated through social media channels, highlights the importance of avoiding cloned or counterfeit devices, which have become a growing concern in the market.
In its statement, the PTA strongly advised the public to buy mobile phones only from reputable and trusted retailers.
One of the key recommendations is to ensure that the phone comes with an active warranty, as this can provide important protection against potential issues.
The PTA also emphasized the importance of purchasing phones that are still in their original packaging.
Consumers should verify that the phone’s International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number on the device matches the one displayed on the box.
Additionally, the presence of a PTA stamp on the box should be confirmed to ensure the authenticity of the device.
To further safeguard against fraud, the PTA suggested using several verification methods.
Customers can utilize the Device Verification System (DVS) app, send an SMS with their IMEI number to 8484, or visit the PTA’s official website at https://dirbs.pta.gov.pk to check the validity of their devices.
The authority also issued a warning about the risks associated with purchasing high-end devices at unusually low prices or those lacking proper warranties. Such offers might indicate potential fraud or the sale of counterfeit products.
For added security, customers are encouraged to ensure that their mobile devices are well-packaged at the time of purchase and to establish contact with the seller in case of any issues.
If consumers encounter fraud or suspect that they have been deceived, they are advised to report the matter to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
Overall, the PTA’s advisory aims to protect consumers from fraudulent practices and ensure that they make informed and secure purchases when buying mobile phones.
