The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has introduced a sweeping set of relief and development initiatives focused on energy affordability, transport, education, healthcare, and worker welfare.
In a major decision, the provincial cabinet approved a 30% to 40% reduction in electricity tariffs for power companies operating in Punjab, such as Quaid-e-Azam Thermal and Punjab Thermal Power. This move aims to provide significant financial relief to households, making Punjab the first province to voluntarily reduce power rates. CM Maryam termed it “a bold step to ease the burden on citizens.”
The cabinet also greenlit the creation of Air Punjab Private Limited, the province’s first airline, with operations expected to begin by the end of 2025. The airline aims to improve regional connectivity and offer affordable domestic flights.
Furthering clean mobility, the cabinet approved electric bus services in nine divisions and the establishment of charging stations across major cities. Additionally, 1,100 interest-free electric taxis will be distributed in Lahore to support unemployed youth and promote environmental sustainability.
The cabinet took health and education reforms a step further by allocating Rs40 billion for upgrading government schools with modern facilities and passing the Punjab Autism School and Resource Center Act 2025, ensuring free admission for autistic children. It also approved the development of Nawaz Sharif Medical City on 5,000 kanals in Lahore, featuring specialized hospitals and facilities.
Support for farmers includes a Rs5,000 per acre subsidy for over 514,000 wheat growers and approval of the Chief Minister’s Wheat Program 2025. Under the Kisan Card initiative, Rs18 billion worth of fertilizers has already been distributed.
Labour reforms include ration cards for registered workers, implementation of safety protocols, and protective kits for sanitation staff.
Eco-tourism and urban improvements, such as park developments and new bus shelters, were also approved. Support packages for journalists and court attack victims’ families were sanctioned. The cabinet praised CM Maryam’s electoral success, citing her popularity among youth and rural voters.
