KARACHI: The Pakistan Rangers Sindh have suspended a personnel member involved in the assault of Karachi University Professor Dr Afaaq Ahmed, according to a statement by the Karachi University Teachers’ Society (KUTS) on Thursday.
Incident Involved Slapping Professor Over Refusal to Allow Garbage Burning
The disciplinary action follows an incident three days earlier in which a Rangers official allegedly slapped Dr Afaaq Ahmed after the professor requested him not to burn garbage near his residence in the Karachi University staff colony. The assault resulted in broken glasses and an eye injury for the professor.
Teachers’ Association Demanded Accountability
In response, KUTS demanded a fair investigation and urged swift action against those involved. During a staff club meeting held today, Dr Ahmed recounted the incident, which prompted a strong show of support from university leadership and faculty members.
VC, Rangers Officials Express Support and Take Action
Karachi University Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi and KUTS President Dr Mohsin Ali visited Dr Ahmed at his residence, expressing solidarity. Senior Rangers officials also met with the professor and condemned the incident.
The Rangers sector commander ordered the immediate suspension of the official and launched disciplinary proceedings. Officials also assured that strict action would follow.
Professor Expresses Confidence in Authorities
According to the KUTS statement, Dr Ahmed expressed satisfaction with the steps taken by both Rangers and university officials. He extended gratitude to the VC, KUTS leadership, and Rangers officials for their timely response.
Meeting participants appreciated the coordinated efforts to address the matter and called for continued accountability to uphold the university’s dignity and security.
