On Friday, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) announced that it will be closed on Tuesday, September 17, in observance of Eid Milad-un-Nabi.
This announcement, detailed in an official circular from the central bank, informs the public that all banking operations will be suspended on this date to mark the celebration of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The circular from the SBP explicitly states: “The State Bank of Pakistan will remain closed on September 17, 2024 (Tuesday) due to a public holiday for Eid Milad-un-Nabi (12th Rabi-ul-Awal, 1446 A.H).”
This closure will affect all branches of the State Bank as well as commercial banks across the country, aligning with the broader observance of the holiday.
In addition to the SBP, the Pakistan Stock Exchange Limited (PSX) has also announced its closure for the same day.
This decision aligns with the federal government’s notification issued earlier on September 6, which declared September 17 as a public holiday.
The coordination of these closures is intended to ensure that all financial and stock market activities are halted to honor the significant religious occasion.
Eid Milad-un-Nabi, also known as the 12th Rabi-ul-Awal, is celebrated by Muslims globally to commemorate the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
This special day is marked by various religious and cultural activities, including prayers, recitations, and gatherings to honor the Prophet’s life and teachings.
The holiday provides an opportunity for Muslims to reflect on the virtues and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and to participate in community events that reinforce their faith and unity.
As a result, institutions like the SBP and PSX observe this day to respect the cultural and religious significance of Eid Milad-un-Nabi for the Muslim community.
