At least seven people lost their lives while several others sustained injuries following an explosion near a peace committee office in the Wana area of South Waziristan district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Deputy Commissioner Nasir Khan confirmed that the blast occurred close to the peace committee’s premises, resulting in seven fatalities and injuries to 16 individuals. The wounded were transported to the District Headquarters Hospital in Wana for medical treatment.
Police officials reported that the explosion completely destroyed the peace committee’s office. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause and those responsible for the attack. No group has yet claimed responsibility.
The incident comes amid a sharp rise in terror activities across the country. Data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) revealed that militant attacks surged by 42% in January 2025 compared to December 2024.
According to the think tank, 74 militant incidents were recorded nationwide during January, resulting in 91 deaths. The casualties included 35 security personnel, 20 civilians, and 36 militants. Additionally, 117 individuals were injured — 53 from the security forces, 54 civilians, and 10 militants.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa emerged as the most affected region, followed by Balochistan. In KP’s settled districts, militants carried out 27 attacks, claiming 19 lives, including 11 security personnel, six civilians, and two militants.
Meanwhile, KP’s tribal districts (formerly part of FATA) saw 19 attacks, leading to 46 fatalities comprising 13 security personnel, eight civilians, and 25 militants.
Balochistan also witnessed a rise in militant violence with 24 attacks, resulting in 26 deaths, including 11 security personnel, six civilians, and nine militants.
