The increasing influence of social and digital media has significantly transformed wedding traditions in Pakistan. Once a simple family celebration, weddings have now turned into extravagant, week-long affairs featuring multiple events and lavish spending.
New trends, inspired by television dramas and celebrity culture on social media, have introduced elaborate pre-wedding celebrations such as “Bride-to-Be” parties, Mehndi nights, and Dholki events. These occasions, characterized by opulent décor, grand feasts, and extravagant entertainment, have become an essential part of Pakistani wedding culture.
According to wedding planners and industry experts, the average cost of a wedding in Pakistan has surged dramatically, with some families spending over Rs5 million on a single event. Imtiaz Niazi, a professional wedding planner, noted that the wedding industry has grown into a multi-billion-rupee market, fueled by families eager to make their celebrations stand out. The desire for social media validation on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok has further intensified this trend.
However, not everyone welcomes this shift toward excessive spending. Many believe that the essence of marriage is being overshadowed by materialism and competition. “The focus should be on the union of two people, not on extravagant decorations and excessive food,” Niazi remarked.
Mrs. Khan, head of a marriage bureau, expressed concern over the pressure on families to outdo one another in terms of grandeur. She pointed out that the emphasis on lavish events has led to unnecessary financial burdens. “These extravagant traditions have moved us away from the true meaning of marriage. It is time to reassess our priorities and return to the simplicity and elegance of traditional wedding celebrations,” she emphasized.
As the trend of lavish weddings continues to grow, there is a rising call for a return to modest and meaningful ceremonies, ensuring that the sanctity of marriage is not lost in the pursuit of social media validation.
