The National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) issued an early alert on Tuesday regarding a developing low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea, which could potentially intensify into a tropical storm.
According to the NDMA, this possible storm is currently situated near the Lakshadweep Valley in India. It is anticipated to track northwestward and may impact coastal regions of the country during the third week of October.
“Preliminary forecasts indicate a possible landfall along Pakistan’s coastline in the third week of October 2024, depending on the storm’s path and strength,” the disaster management authority stated.
There remains a possibility that the system could further develop into a tropical cyclone, with the potential to significantly affect Pakistan’s coastal areas. Residents and stakeholders, especially those in coastal zones, are advised to monitor official channels for updates and advisories as the situation unfolds.
The NDMA assured that it is closely monitoring the system in collaboration with other relevant departments to provide timely updates and further advisories as necessary.
It is also worth noting that Karachi and other coastal areas experienced intermittent rainfall due to Cyclone Asna, which formed in the Arabian Sea at the end of August.
