Three people lost their lives in a shooting incident in the city of Uppsala, Sweden, on Tuesday, prompting authorities to launch a murder investigation.
According to police, the incident occurred in the city center following multiple reports of gunfire. Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene. Officials confirmed that three individuals had died and stated that the case is being treated as a homicide.
Authorities are currently searching for a single suspect believed to be responsible for the attack, as reported by local media.
Eyewitnesses told local broadcasters that they heard approximately five gunshots and saw people fleeing the area in panic to seek shelter.
This incident follows the country’s deadliest mass shooting in February, when ten people were killed in Örebro. In that attack, a 35-year-old man, reportedly unemployed and acting alone, opened fire on students and teachers at an adult education center.
Sweden has been grappling with increasing levels of gun violence, largely driven by gang-related conflicts that have plagued the country for over a decade.
The current right-wing minority government, which took office in 2022, has pledged to combat organized crime. Since then, authorities have enacted stricter laws and expanded police powers. In the wake of the Örebro shooting, the government also announced plans to tighten gun control regulations further.
