U.S. President Donald Trump has declared that India and Pakistan have agreed to implement a “full and immediate ceasefire” after days of heightened military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Trump made the announcement on Saturday via his Truth Social account, stating, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence.”
The breakthrough comes after escalating tensions led to an exchange of military strikes earlier this week, raising fears of further escalation in the region. The ceasefire agreement is expected to ease regional tensions and restore a measure of stability.
Earlier, the Indian military acknowledged suffering damage at several airbases—namely Pathankot, Udhampur, Bhuj, and Adam Port—following retaliatory strikes carried out by Pakistan.
As of now, neither the Indian nor Pakistani governments have issued an official statement confirming the details of the ceasefire agreement.
However, diplomatic sources in Washington and Islamabad revealed that the United States facilitated urgent backchannel communications throughout the night, pressing both nations to “step back from the brink” and de-escalate the situation.
