UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that he is prepared to deploy British troops to Ukraine if necessary to safeguard the security of Britain and Europe.
Writing in the Daily Telegraph on Sunday, Starmer highlighted the UK’s leadership in supporting Kyiv in its war against Russia. He emphasized that this commitment could extend to “contributing to security guarantees for Ukraine by putting our own troops on the ground if necessary.”
“I do not say this lightly,” Starmer wrote, acknowledging the gravity of potentially sending British servicemen and women into harm’s way. “But any role in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security is also a role in securing the safety of our continent and our country.”
Starmer also confirmed his participation in a high-level meeting in Paris on Monday, aimed at addressing growing concerns over U.S. efforts to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.
Strengthening US-UK Coordination
Starmer revealed plans to meet U.S. President Donald Trump “in the coming days,” underscoring the UK’s “unique role” in fostering close cooperation between Europe and the United States.
“U.S. support will remain critical, and a U.S. security guarantee is essential for lasting peace because only the U.S. can deter [Russian President Vladimir] Putin from launching further attacks,” Starmer said.
The upcoming Paris meeting is set to include the leaders of Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Denmark, coinciding with the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
A Critical Moment for European Security
European leaders fear that a U.S.-brokered deal unfavorable to Ukraine could embolden Moscow, leaving Europe vulnerable to future aggression.
“We are facing a once-in-a-generation moment for the collective security of our continent,” Starmer cautioned. “This is not just about Ukraine’s future—it is existential for Europe as a whole.”
Starmer reaffirmed that Ukraine’s path to NATO membership is “irreversible” and called on European nations to increase defense spending and assume a more significant role within the alliance.
