US Teacher Marc Fogel
Russia has released Marc Fogel, a 63-year-old American schoolteacher whom Washington had designated as “wrongfully detained,” after he spent over three and a half years in a Russian prison.
The White House confirmed his release on Tuesday, marking a significant development in ongoing diplomatic engagements between Moscow and Washington.
Fogel was originally detained in August 2021 and later sentenced to 14 years in prison for carrying approximately 17 grams (0.4 ounces) of medical marijuana into Russia. His arrest and conviction drew widespread criticism, with U.S. officials and human rights advocates calling his sentence excessively harsh and politically motivated.
According to Michael Waltz, national security adviser to former U.S. President Donald Trump, Fogel’s release was secured through negotiations led by Trump and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
While the specifics of the exchange were not disclosed, Waltz characterized it as “a show of good faith from the Russians” and suggested that the move signaled progress toward resolving the war in Ukraine.
“By tonight, Marc Fogel will be on American soil and reunited with his family and loved ones thanks to President Trump’s leadership,” Waltz said in a statement.
Fogel’s family expressed immense relief following the announcement. “We are beyond grateful, relieved, and overwhelmed,” they said in a statement, acknowledging the efforts made to bring him home.
Later on Tuesday, when asked whether the U.S. had made any concessions to Russia in securing Fogel’s release, Trump responded vaguely, stating, “Not much,” without elaborating further. He also praised Russia’s handling of the situation, saying, “We were treated very nicely by Russia, actually.”
Trump further suggested that Fogel’s release could serve as a stepping stone toward improved U.S.-Russia relations and, potentially, an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine. “I hope that’s the beginning of a relationship where we can end that war [in Ukraine] and millions of people can stop being killed,” he said.
Throughout his campaign, Trump has repeatedly claimed that he could end the Russia-Ukraine conflict “within 24 hours” if re-elected, though he has not provided a clear roadmap for achieving that goal. Some of his statements suggest that he may advocate for Ukraine to cede some of its territory to Russia as part of a peace settlement.
As of now, the Russian government has not issued any official statement regarding Fogel’s release.
The U.S. has previously negotiated the release of American detainees in Russia through prisoner exchanges. In August last year, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, along with two other U.S. citizens, was freed from Russian custody in a similar deal.
Fogel’s case had drawn comparisons to previous high-profile detentions, and his release signals another instance of diplomatic maneuvering between Washington and Moscow.
