A high-stakes meeting between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ended in a sudden breakdown, resulting in the Ukrainian delegation being asked to leave the White House.
According to U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, tensions escalated on Friday during discussions over a minerals agreement between the two nations. The negotiations collapsed when Zelensky urged increased American support for Kyiv, conflicting with Trump’s neutral stance on mediating peace with Moscow.
Trump reportedly accused Zelensky of lacking gratitude for U.S. assistance and being unwilling to compromise for an end to the ongoing conflict. Vice President J.D. Vance also criticized Zelensky’s diplomatic approach during the talks.
Waltz recounted the incident in an interview, stating that he and Secretary of State Marco Rubio relayed Trump’s firm position to the Ukrainian delegation. “They were shocked,” he said. “I don’t know how they expected to continue after such a public confrontation.”
Reports indicate that White House staff confirmed Trump had effectively expelled Zelensky, with the Ukrainian side later attempting to resume discussions. However, Rubio and Waltz insisted that the delegation leave immediately.
Waltz underscored growing American frustration, questioning how Ukraine could “insult someone while simultaneously seeking financial and military assistance.”
Following the incident, Rubio criticized Zelensky for what he called a failed diplomatic strategy and suggested he should apologize for the fallout. However, in an interview, Zelensky admitted that the meeting had been unproductive but maintained that he had acted with honesty and transparency, asserting he had no reason to apologize.
